The National Museum of Decorative Art was created in 1937, by National Law 12351, which approved the acquisition of the residence and the art collection of Josefina de Alvear and Matías Errázuriz Ortúzar.

The couple acquired a valuable collection of European and Eastern art that now is patrimony of the National Museum of Decorative Art. The residence is a great example of French eclectisism which was in fashion in the country at the beginning of the XXth century. The furniture, paintings, sculptures and decorative art objects also belonged to the family collection.

The patrimony of the National Museum of Decorative Arts has about 5000 pieces. There are outstanding paintings such as works by El Greco, J. H. Fragonard, Edouard Manet, Jean B. C. Corot and J. de Sorolla. There are numerous sculpture works of Flemish and Spanish imagery, a relieve from C. Mantegazza, works by A. Rodin, the portrait of Matías Errázuriz by P. Troubetzkoy and various art works by Alberto Lagos.

There are chairs and armchairs signed by G. Jacob, many secretaires of the XVIII century, and a magnificent dressing table and a desk by D. Roentgen with bronzes from Rémond. It contains important pieces of goldsmith, among them, the silvergolden soup bowl by Francois Germain.

The Museum also has the most important Collection of Miniature Portraits in the Americas, which is made up by the works of the most well known European miniature artists of the XVI and XIX centuries.

The Museum offers programs with the temporary and permanent exhibits. It has guided visits in Spanish and English. To provide better opportunities for foreign visitors, there are bilingual displays with old photographs in all rooms on the ground and first floors. There are also conferences, musical performances, workshops, courses, and other cultural activities.
